Kanebo was originally established as a cotton trading company in 1887. The business gradually expanded to include the manufacture and trading of silk, and Kanebo began exporting high-quality silk all around the world.
By 1936 the company had grown to become Japan's largest privately owned manufacturer. In the same year it released Savon de Soie, a high-grade silk-based soap created using silk technologies the company had acquired through experience. The company entered the cosmetics industry in the following year and quickly grew to become Japan's second largest manufacturer of cosmetics. Kanebo Cosmetics products are now sold in 53 countries and regions around the world.
Kanebo Cosmetics spun off from Kanebo in 2004 as a company specialized exclusively in cosmetics. In 2006, it came under the wing of the Kao Group, Japan's largest manufacturer of household consumer goods.
In Japan, the No. 1 market for Kanebo Cosmetics, the company tailors its products to consumer age groups and market segments at department stores, specialized cosmetics retail outlets, drugstores, and general merchandise stores. The company is establishing brands with special strengths in all of the market segments to which it sells.
Overseas, Kanebo Cosmetics is developing brands attuned to the features of major market segments in Asia, Europe, and America. The company is stepping up investment in markets with outstanding growth prospects such as China and other Asian countries and Russia in pursuit of further growth as a global concern.
